Do Something Amazing – Take Part in the Cancer Research UK Race for Life

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2009 events are taking place across the UK during May, June and July, so why not walk, jog or run the 5K race and help raise money to beat cancer. This is the largest women-only fundraising event in the country, where all ages come together to raise money to help Cancer Research UK continue with their life saving work.

Since the event began in 15 years ago, death rates for –

  • ovarian cancer have dropped by around 10%
  • lung cancer have dropped by 20%
  • bowel cancer have dropped by 20%
  • cervical cancer have dropped by 40%

In this time breast cancer has also fallen by 20% over the past 10 years, with almost two thirds of women diagnosed now likely to survive for at least 20 years.

Over four million women have taken part in race since it’s conception in 1994 raising over £240 million.

This year’s target is to raise a massive £62.5 million to achieve Cancer Research UK’s vision of beating cancer. With more than 1 in 3 people developing some form of cancer during their lifetime, this disease can affect anyone at any age.

Cancer Research UK is almost entirely funded by donations from the public, so every penny raised in Race for Life goes towards funding the work of the thousands of doctors, nurses and scientists who dedicate their lives to finding new ways to prevent and treat cancer.

There are over 230 Race for Life events taking place across the UK during the summer this year, so why not take part and help Cancer Research in the battle to beat cancer.
