WSPA Helping Stop Bear Baiting in Pakistan

WSPA charity officials are pleased to announce that the 3 bears they rescued from baiting are enjoying their new found freedom at their Balkasar sanctuary in Pakistan. The bears, Leela, Kaali and Bhoori, were being held to fight against trained dog, a barbaric tradition in the region that has been going on for centuries. This local custom is slowly being stopped, not just by charity officials, but also by locals who believe it is against Allah’s will from animals to be treated this way.

Thanks to your kind donations, WSPA can assist and support Dr Fakhar’s amazing work to help stop bears from being treated this way and living a life of violence and fear. Their work has been so successful that the WSPA bear sanctuary in Pakistan’s Kund Park is now full!

Dr. Fakhar said –

We’re the victims of our own success. When our monitoring work officially started in 2003 there were around 300 bears used for baiting. Now, by our recent estimates, there are only around 70 left. This is wonderful – a great tribute to our work and the kindness of WSPA supporters.
