Save the Children Concern as Haiti Face Tropical Storm

Save the Children charity officials are concerned about the news that a huge tropical storm is heading to Haiti. With literally thousands of people still living in tents after the devastating earthquake in 2010, the people of Haiti are preparing themselves for Storm Isaac that should arrive today.

Almost half a million people are still living in makeshift shelters, and with winds of hurricane force expected, this could be a serious threat to the families made homeless by the earthquake 2 years ago. With the storm will come heavy rain, flooding and mudslides that could be a real danger to those people who have already been displaced.

Save the Children’s Country Director in Haiti, Lisa Laumann, said –

As Isaac bears down on Haiti, thousands of families are relying on flimsy canvas to protect them from a potential hurricane. Hurricanes can cause enormous destruction and even those in permanent buildings are not safe. It’s important that we are as ready as possible to reduce risks and to respond to disasters. Families living in Haiti’s tent cities are in an extremely precarious situation. They have nowhere to go to seek shelter from the storm. If the forecasts are correct, Haiti could be on the cusp of another humanitarian crisis.

Save the Children is still working on the ground in Haiti to help those families who are still recovering from the 2010 earthquake, and are bracing themselves for another humanitarian response if required. Haiti is particularly vulnerable to hurricanes, so our thoughts and prayers are with the people of this tiny island who have had to deal with this constant barrage of bad weather.
