About the Lazy Housewife Bean : Donated by P Cross from March in Cambridge, this English marrowfat pea was bred in 1843 as ‘Fairbeards Champion of England’ and was judged the ‘Best Pea’ by the Journal of Horticulture in 1876.

This is a tall variety (over 1.8m) requiring strong supports. Reliable and vigorous, it produces white flowers and a heavy crop of pods, generously filled with sweet, wrinkled seeds. Seed Guardians Mary Eastwood and Jane Hibbard both found them “far too tasty to cook”; they are ideal for salads and eating straight from the pod.

About the Heritage Seed Library

The Heritage Seed Library help conserve and make available vegetable varieties that don’t feature in modern seed catalogues. Once we have enough seed to distribute, all our seed varieties will become available to our members. Currently about 200 varieties feature in our Seed Catalogue.

They are doing this to ensure that these precious breeds and strains don’t disappear forever and to safeguard our diverse heritage for future generations.

A a DETR funded Seed Search was carried out between 1997 and 2000 with the aim to seek out and save regional, family and historic vegetable varieties. The The Heritage Seed Library Guardians take on the responsibility for growing these endangered seeds for us. Their work in growing and gathering these seeds is essential to developing and growing our seed stock.
